Having a Good One

When thinking back over our little reunion the other night, I've come to decide that Gary had the most fun out of all of us. He kept telling us that he was having a blast, expressing his thanks for each of us taking the time to gather together once more. That night, we were his students once more, and he was the Teacher.

I was reminded of something Ryan said in a sermon a few weeks back. Someone had asked him what a good week looked like for him. He responded by giving what he felt was a good answer at the time. Later, during his sermon prep, he was convicted on what he'd said. Why? The text that Ryan was digging through was the fourth verse of the third book of John:

I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.

For John, his good week was when others whom he loved had good weeks, namely, his children in the faith.

Gary's been through a lot. He's far more seasoned in life, far wiser, far more knowledgeable than any of those who had gathered around him. In a sense, we were gathered there not just because of Gary, but to honor him. Humanly speaking, he's the common thread that God used to knit us together, and I doubt any of us will ever forget that.

At one point, he observed that it was great to see that each of us still walked as believers. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think it's safe to say that Gary was experiencing the same joy that the apostle spoke of. Come to think of it, I think it's also safe to say that Gary's having a good week...even a great one.
