Notre Dame has their quarterback of the future. I'm quite happy about this, as are Domers and fellow Irish fans across the country...and world. The pessimist in me still has one nagging little thought, though: the last time ND signed the top-rated high school quarterback in the country, he ended up being massively mediocre. It wasn't that he was bad; he just wasn't the second coming of Joe Montana, Joe Theisman, Johnny Lujack, John Huarte, Rick Mirer, Tony Rice, or even his predecessor, Kevin McDougal. Nope, he was simply Ron Powlus, the guy who Beano Cook infamously and erroneously predicted might win not just one, but two Heisman Trophies while in South Bend.

Ugh. I remember hearing that prediction and being caught up in it, just like everyone else. The pessimist in me still cringes at the memory. Perhaps that'll make Jimmy Clausen's success, should it unfold as I hope it will, all the more sweet to savor.
